Attorney Elaine A. Shanebrook has retired as chairperson of the St. Joseph’s Community Hospital’s board of directors, the hospital announced Tuesday.

Shanebrook, principle partner of Shanebrook Law Office in West Bend, has been a member of the hospital’s board since 1991. She was first elected chairperson in September 1999.

Shanebrook will continue to serve as a member of the hospital’s board and as chair of SynergyHealth’s board of directors. The hospital is a member of SynergyHealth, which also includes the West Bend Clinic.

Shanebrook headed the board of directors during what has been the most turbulent and controversial period in the hospital’s more than 70 years as St. Joseph’s faced vocal opposition to its plan to leave the city and build a new $55 million facility on 143 acres in the town of Polk.

"Elaine has gone well beyond her original commitment to serve as chair for two years," said John Duwell, a member of the hospital’s Executive Committee. "On behalf of the hospital board, I cannot begin to express our appreciation to Elaine for her dedicated service as chair."

"During the past three years, the hospital has put a new strategic plan in place to assure the long-term success of our community-based hospital," said Shanebrook. "The hospital is in a better financial position than it was three years ago, and building issues that were in various stages of design have been resolved in favor of a new, modern and efficient facility."

Members of the Executive Committee will preside over hospital board meetings until the nominating committee brings its recommendation to the board.

"The board will continue to act as a single governing unit while the nominating committee completes the process of evaluating a number of candidates for chair," said Tom Bast, nominating committee chairman. "We fully understand Elaine’s position and appreciate the tremendous amount of time and effort she has given as chair during the past few years. We also believe that it is critical that we complete our process before we make a recommendation to the board."

The nominating committee expects to make its recommendation within the next few months.

SynergyHealth is a regional health care system for the greater Washington County community. St. Joseph’s Community Hospital of West Bend, the West Bend Clinic, and SynergyHealth Foundation are members of SynergyHealth.
